Turning up the heat: Mitsubishi Lancer EvoX vs Audi S3 vs Subaru Impreza WRX STi

Posted: 09 Oct 2012 12:29 PM PDT

Which performance hatch makes most sense on second-hand market?

Mitsubishi Lancer EvoX

The Lancer Evo X was Mitsubishi‘s attempt at giving its rally bred performance saloon a more grown-up look and feel. It worked, too – the styling was toned-down as the focus was put on the performance and the driver.

The driving position is excellent, as is the car’s handling. There’s also plenty of space in the back. But high running costs, particularly for insurance, are likely to put some buyers off, while used prices are also quite steep.

In 2010, the EvoX was recalled over possible clutch failure. Many owners also report bits of trim falling apart, although major issues seem few and far between.

Details

Years: 2008 to date
Engine: 2.0-litre 4cyl, 291bhp
Insurance grp: 42
Econ/CQ2: 26.2mpg/256g/km
Why? A real driver-focused car, with an almost perfect driving position and excellent handling.
Prices from: £14,989

Verdict

High used prices hold the Evo X back. It’s still the besthandling car of the three, but it’s further let down by mechanical and quality issues.

Audi S3

The S3 has a low-key image compared to its two rivals, focusing as much on premium feel and interior quality as on performance. It’s not quite as quick as the other cars, although it’s way ahead in terms of running costs.

This more mellow nature may not live up to buyers’ expectations, however, while the styling is rather mundane compared to the other fast hatchbacks on offer here.

Mechanically, the S3 should provide no cause for concern, with no major issues reported by owners over the years. And as well as being the cheapest car to run in our trio, it’s the easiest to live with.

Details

Years: 2006 to 2012
Engine: 2.0-litre 4cyl, 261bhp
Insurance grp: 36E
Econ/CQ2: 31mpg/217g/km
Why? Interior quality is excellent, and despite its performance credentials, 53 is quite cheap to run.
Prices from: £12,689

Verdict

While it’s not the strongest performer here, the S3 scores with its quality and reliability – and this is likely to give the car much greater appeal as a second-hand purchase.

Subaru Impreza WRX Sti

While Subaru‘s latest Impreza isn’t the gold alloy-wheeled rally champion of old, it’s still held in high regard among a certain set of motorists – and is the model with the most character out of this trio, too.

It’s the fastest, most powerful car here, with 0-60mph in 4.7 seconds. This added pace does come at a price, however, and the engine is noisy and can feel a little unrefined.

Inside, the Impreza is basic with cheapfeeling plastics, which haven’t aged well. Piston failures have been an issue on some early models, too – this could end in a costly repair. But the Subaru is the cheapest to buy.

Details

Years: 2008 to 2011
Engine: 2.5-litre 4cyl, 296bhp
Insurance grp: 40A
Econ/CQ2: 27.4mpg/243g/km
Why? The Impreza has a strong reputation, and the 296bhp 2.5-litre engine offers plenty of power.
Prices from: £11,695

Verdict

Prices work in the Subaru‘s favour, plus it offers the most power here. However, unrefined engine and poor quality stop it finishing higher than third.

The new 2014 Audi A3 Sportback, according to the spokesmen from Audi, will include an engine that will be quite low-powered compared to the previous high-end Audi A3s. It will also be a 5-door hatchback, a very hyped vehicle from Audi. This car will be ultra-lightweight – basically thanks to the aluminum constructed body.
