Highlights Of The 2012 SEMA Show

Posted: 11 Nov 2012 07:05 AM PST

The SEMA (Special Equipment Market Association) Show is the premier automotive specialty products trade event in the world. It draws the industry's brightest minds and hottest products to one place. SEMA 2012 invaded the Las Vegas Convention Center this past week (30th Oct’12 -2nd Nov'12). In addition SEMA show provides attendees with educational seminars, product demonstrations, special events, networking opportunities and more. Although this annual show is not open to the public, it attracts more than 100,000 leaders from all branches of the automotive industry. With more than 2 million square feet of exhibits on display, the sounds, the sights, the creativity, the insanity, SEMA is a melting pot of ideas, cultures and a crossroads for all the things cars.

This is the biggest modified cars show in the United States. The show is divided in to 4 main attractions: hot rod and muscle car tuning, modified modern cars, rims and finally innovative technology. It is a must see for anyone interested in car modification. Serious minded people might dismiss the event as a frivolous exercise in chrome, styling and monster wheels. Its all of those things, but the fantastic nature of some of the machines belies the meaning of the show: it’s about the ideas for car people and by car people.

Recognized for being the most popular platforms for customization in their segment, the Ford Mustang, Scion FR-S, Jeep Wrangler and Ford F-Series trucks have each just been awarded a SEMA “hottest car” award. Not only did the FR-S win the Best of Show award for the Sport Compact class, but based on gross tonnage the rear-drive Scion has got to be one of the most popular models in the tuner world today.

Ford has never before claimed a “Hottest car” award at SEMA. However, times change. The 2013 Mustang has been awarded the coveted prize, given the best vehicle to customize. The last two last years have gone to the Chevrolet Camaro.

For second year in the row, the Jeep Wrangler received the “Hottest 4×4-SUV” award at SEMA.

Just as the Jeep Wrangler dominated the exhibitor booths at SEMA as being the most popular SUV, the Ford F-Series, in F-150 and Super Duty versions, was the most well represented truck at the show. For performance tuning, the 6.7-litre Scorpion Power Stroke diesel as well as the 3.5-litre EcoBoost V6 have proven popular with the aftermarket, owing to the bolt-on and chip-tuning power potential inherent in their factory turbo configurations.

Tuned Toyota Corolla Dashboard Gets iPad Mini

It has not even been a month ever since Apple launched its iPad Mini. This little wonder is yet to show its prowess among the tech-savvy generation. However, the iPad Mini has already found a place in the automobile industry. If accepted well, then that day is not far when we will get to see it in most of the cars on the road. This 7.9-inch tablet has been used by an audio system specialist, who has fitted it into a 2012 Toyota Corolla sedan.

Soundwaves of Tampa, a Florida based company, specializes in giving their customers the best audio experience while driving their favorite vehicles. Now the company has caught hold of the recently launched iPad Mini and installed it in the Corolla. This is first time when an aftermarket kit has used a tablet in a car. The tuning company created a special console on the dashboard so that the iPad Mini can just slide through it and fits there perfectly.

Well, that gives a touch-screen interface inside your car and thus a difference experience all together. The apps on the iPad Mini like the maps can come as a great advantage just like any other navigation system. The music too can be accessed and your favorite playlist is right in front of you. The company claims that it can fit the tablet in most of the cars. The installation cost starts at around $800 (Rs. 44,000/- approximately). Well, mind you, it does not include the iPad Mini’s cost.

Mitsubishi Pulls The Plug On Lancer Diesel & Pajero SFX

Pajero Off-Roading

Hindustan Motors and Mitsubishi have finally decided to put covers on both these iconic cars in India. Production discontinuation is already in effect for the Pajero SFX and the Lancer Diesel sedan and in the next couple of months should vanish from dealer stockyards too. Discontinuation for the Pajero SFX was expected as the Japanese car maker slashed prices of the recently launched Pajero Sport SUV after taking the CKD route. Pajero SFX had a big fan following amongst SUV enthusiasts and off-roaders for its rugged build quality and reliability. Lancer diesel too was a well built, reliable and frugal C-segment car and is still waiting for a substitute to come.

Mitsubishi is currently selling five models in India like the Pajero Sport, Lancer Evolution X, Montero, Outlander and Cedia. Like the Lancer Diesel, Cedia too is struggling in the upper C-segment market where cars in this segment offer much better looks and performance. Cedia is only available with a 2.0-litre petrol engine having brilliant driving dynamics but what it needs is a modern day turbo diesel engine for its survival in the Indian market. Last month Mitsubishi sold a total of 4 units of the Lancer and Cedia combined, while the Pajero SFX did not even sell 1 unit!

Heavy discounts on these outgoing models are expected in order to clear the stock. We hope Mitsubishi gets its latest generation Lancer to India. Mitsubishi has big plans for the Pajero Sport as the company aims to double its annual sales with this one product. Let's see how the company manages to achieve this aim and go head to head with rival products like the Toyota Fortuner, Ford Endeavour, Chevrolet Captiva and Hyundai Santa Fe.
