Renault Duster Facelift

Renault had unveiled the DCross Concept at the 2012 Sao Paulo Motor Show last month, which drew quite a lot of eye candy. This concept gives us a glimpse of how the facelift of the Renault Duster will look like. The Duster has been on sale since quite some time now and a mid-life mild update is due next year. The facelift will help the French auto maker keep things fresh till the next generation model arrives in 2015. The Duster is a compact entry-level SUV conceptualized by Renault’s Romanian subsidiary, Dacia.

The facelifted Renault Duster will get minor changes to the exterior and interiors. The front will get a new bumper, grille and headlights. The side profile will remain almost similar, but newly designed alloy wheels are expected. The rear will get revisions to the bumper and tail lights. On the inside, the Duster is expected to get new fabric along with improvements in quality and addition of some new features. There will be no mechanical changes to this compact SUV which will continue to draw power from the 1.5-litre diesel engine and 1.6-litre petrol engine.

The Renault Duster has been doing very well for the French car maker in India. The vehicle has boosted sales drastically for the company, helping it overtake quite a few manufacturers in monthly sales. Currently the Duster has no real competition but in 2013, the vehicle will face intense heat from Ford’s EcoSport. In order to fend off competition from the American automaker, Renault is preparing to launch more variants of the Duster, including automatic and 4-wheel drive versions.

Super-Light Audi TT On Its Way

Next Gen Audi TT

Audi decides to showcase its latest technology by introducing a 1000 kgs high-performance version of the Audi TT soon. The next-generation Audi TT will be sculpted with a combination of carbon-fibre, steel and aluminum with four-wheel drive Quattro system. Wolfgang Durheimer, Audi's new Head of technical development said that a car in the TT segment weighing 1000 kgs would be a very interesting proposition, it would be a derivative of the TT and the challenge is to make it a quattro too. He added that it is likely to feature a five-cylinder engine and a roll cage in the back.

Audi will need to work on the latest materials and technology, in order to achieve such a remarkably low weight. The next-generation Audi TT will be based on the MQB platform and the advantage for using that platform is that it can be made from either steel, a mix of steel and aluminum, or a mix of the above with carbon-fibre structural elements as it has been showcased in the Crosslane Coupe Concept at the 2012 Paris Motor Show in September.

The company is pushing toward mutli-material platforms. Wolfgang Durheimer explained that they can combine aluminum and steel, glue carbon to aluminum and even rivet carbon to tempered steel. These innovations can be seen on the next-generation Audi Q7 due in 2014. The next Q7 is expected to be the first Audi based on the new MLB platform that will support a variety of upcoming Audis from the A4 to the A8. Like the new Range Rover, the next Q7 will also shed weight by using aluminum with carbon elements in its structure.

Wolfgang Durheimer confirmed that the car will lose about 200 kgs in the body alone and around 350 kgs in total. He added that it will to cost much more due to the more expensive materials being used. It will be like the Porsche 911 GT3 pricing strategy. The new Audi TT is also expected in 2014, but we'll have to wait a year or two longer for the super-lightweight special version of the Audi TT which will be priced significantly higher than the regular model.

Posted: 26 Nov 2012 04:19 AM PST

2013 Jaguar F Type

Jaguar is all set to launch five new models in the next five years. This new set of launches will begin with the new F-type in 2014 to the all new XJ in 2017. The iconic British car manufacturer will also bring many new versions of their cars with many updates.

Jaguar will first launch the F-type roadster which is a small, rear drive sports car to rival the Porsche 911. Then they will bring in two coupe versions, the SC and the R. Then an all-wheel drive version of the car and later a street racer GT version. All these versions will give a varied portfolio to this amazing sports car, like its main German rival.

Next in line is the all new XK. This already beautiful GT car will get an all new body while it retains the older, but slightly modified platform. It will get more power, torque and will be more aggressive along with a lot more luxury features.

After the sports cars come the sedans. First in line here is a completely new entry level executive sedan, code named the X760, to rival the BMW 3-Series, Audi A4 and the Mercedes C-class. It will use the competent Premium Lightweight Architecture (PLA) aluminum platform and body technology which is currently used in the XJ and the 2013 Range Rover. This rear wheel drive car will first be seen as a sedan in 2015 as well as a crossover in 2016.

Jaguar will then launch the new version of the XF, codenamed the X260. First the sedan will be released followed by an estate version (or Sportbrake). They may also give us a crossover version of this car which will be built using some car from the Land Rover branch. The possibility of a coupe and convertible are also being considered.

Last but not the least, the all new version of the flagship XJ will be launched in 2017. This is codenamed the X360. There is a possibility of three models for the XJ. First they will launch the new XJ replacement. where it may retain the 4-door sedan body type or a completely new design may be used. Next is a four-door, four-seat coupe version of the XJ sedan which will rival the Mercedes CLS, Audi A7 and the BMW Gran Coupe with even more luxurious interiors. Finally Jaguar is preparing a super luxury version of the XJ. This version will get superlative exterior and interior design and will be a direct competitor to the Bentley Continental Flying Spur.

Audi Plans Small City Car With 99 km/l Mileage

Posted: 26 Nov 2012 04:13 AM PST

Audi A1 Berlin Drive

Audi is developing a small city car based on the A1 platform that will deliver an astonishing 98.7 km/l mileage. This car is internally codenamed the '1.0-litre car'. The vehicle will be a typical affordable four-seater hatchback with all modern conveniences and features. The car will use the current Audi A1's steel platform, but the suspension setup and interiors of the car will be much lighter to save weight. The car’s exteriors will be designed based on the Audi Crosslane Coupe concept.

This Audi city car was earlier rumored to have the two-cylinder diesel engine from the Volkswagen XLR-1 prototype, but it is now confirmed that it is not so. This car will use a new 1.0-litre engine with electric assisted drive. It will also use carbon fibre for certain components to make it lighter. Also this carbon fibre will be injection-moulded, which is a process that is much quicker and cost effective than normal. Audi said that this car will take some time to develop and it may be launched by 2016.

This revolutionary car may be Audi's stepping stone into the world of ultra-frugal drive trains which will give amazing fuel efficiency figures. If Audi can make this car affordable enough for regular customers it will definitely have a lot of takers. If the German automaker can keep costs low and launch this car in India, it might as well transform the Indian automotive scenario with a car that can do 100 kms to the litre, which is something that even bikes barely manage.

Jaguar XF 2.2 Diesel Spotted In India

Posted: 26 Nov 2012 04:05 AM PST

2012 Jaguar XF Spyshot

A camouflaged facelifted Jaguar XF was spotted testing in Pune recently. It is suspected that the engine being tested under the hood is a 2.2-litre turbo diesel unit. Jaguar has already begun the CKD assembly of the 3-litre V6 XF at Chikli recently and now it is expected that the company will fit in the entry level 2.2-litre turbo diesel in the India-spec XF. The 2.2-liter, four-cylinder turbo diesel engine will be mated to an 8-speed automatic transmission and it will churn out a peak power of 190 BHP and a peak torque of 190 Nm. The engine Start-Stop feature will be standard on this unit.

The 2.2-litre turbo diesel engine will be borrowed from its siblings, the Land Rover Freelander 2 and the Range Rover Evoque crossover. This engine is known for producing good fuel efficiency and this can be a major selling point for the India-spec Jaguar XF Diesel. The price is expected to be around Rs. 40 lakh for the Jaguar XF 2.2 diesel luxury sedan and it will give a tough competition to its German rivals like the Audi A6, the BMW 5-Series and the Mercedes-Benz E-Class.

The 2.2-litre engine will weigh about 65 kgs less than the 3.0-litre V6 diesel. The lower weight may result in sharper steering response as well, which should make the handling more delightful. With more aggressive pricing, the XF will appeal to a larger audience. Indian buyers will now have more options in this affordable luxury sedan segment with the 2.2-litre diesel powered XF. Jaguar is also set to be working on a BMW 3-Series rival which is expected to be unveiled in 2014.

Janus Halcyon – The Latest Hand Built Motorcycle

Posted: 26 Nov 2012 01:42 AM PST

Janus Halcyon

Janus is the most recent small scale motorcycle company from Goshen, Indiana in U.S.A., that have developed their first bike this year and will start production by end of 2013. This company was started by custom bike, performance parts and tools builder David Biek and his partner, classical architect, Richard Worsham. Their first motorcycle is a small, light, very maneuverable city bike called the Halcyon. It has a 50 cc, 10 HP, 2-stroke engine, designed and manufactured in Spain, a six-speed gearbox and a very stylish old school design that takes inspiration from record breaker's from the 1920's and 1930's.

The Janus Halcyon is completely hand crafted with most of the components built in their workshop and surrounding leather and metal workers. The philosophy on which the founders started the company is that they wanted a completely new class of city bikes for young men and women to give them freedom of commuting with easy handling, a nippy drive, very simple uncomplicated engineering, with a design that made a statement and did not have the typical ‘Biker’ image.

The founders of Janus wanted their products to be extremely exclusive with extreme attention to detail with hand crafted high quality feel. They did not want their bikes to be copies of any particular bike or be a representation of a particular era, but products based on the simple, uncomplicated design philosophies of the bikes of the past that also lays the foundations for the future.

Along with simplicity and exclusive attention to detail from the long gone era, the bike boasts all the modern conveniences. The engine is a modern liquid-cooled unit and can be easily ungraded to produce almost double the power. It has low beam / high beam lights, turn indicators, speedometers and mirrors. Also it has both kick and electric start, and oil injection system and it does a top speed of about 90 km/hr. The Halcyon is completely road legal, has a proper VIN number, comes with proper registration and other documents and can be used on any city or highway roads (expect a few restricted freeways).

The cost of a fully specked Janus Halcyon is about Rs. 2,65,000/- and the base model is about Rs. 1,95,000/-. Though these bikes seem pretty expensive, they are highly exclusive and provide an experience of riding like no other bike. Also this may bring a new era in production bikes that are as highly exclusively built as custom bikes and have a design that is truly beautiful. The company has two more products in development, a 1960′s British inspired model and a 1970′s Grande Prix inspired bike.
