2013 Fiat 500L

Fiat has recently introduced the new 1.6-litre Multijet 2 diesel engine in a new state of tune for the Fiat 500L. The 1.6-litre Fiat MultiJet 2 unit gets an improved figure of maximum torque of 320 Nm, which is 30 Nm more than the 290 Nm torque of the previous engine. The maximum power output remains the same at 105 BHP. The new 1.6-litre Multijet 2 diesel engine gives the Fiat 500L a 0 – 100 km/hr time of 11.3 seconds, while the top speed is 181 km/hr. The claimed mileage is 22.22 km/l.

Fiat will introduce the 1.6-litre Multijet diesel engine in the rest of its line-up in the near future. The company will introduce this motor in India with the next generation Linea, which is expected to be launched next year. The new Fiat Multijet 2 diesel engine will also bear the responsibility of powering India spec Jeep products. The 1.6-litre Multijet 2 turbo diesel engine will power the B-segment and C-segment Jeep SUVs. Currently, Fiat will introduce the Jeep brand in India with the launch of the Grand Cherokee and Wrangler SUVs taking the CBU route.

The SUVs featuring the new 1.6-litre Multijet 2 diesel engines are expected to hit the Indian shores in 2014. Coming to the Fiat 500L, the car will be offered with a 4-cylinder 1.6-litre diesel engine with electronically controlled Common Rail MultiJet II direct injection with fixed geometry turbocharger and intercooler producing 105 BHP of peak power and 320 Nm of peak torque, mated to a 6-speed manual gearbox transmitting the power to the front wheels. The power output is the same as Volkswagen’s 1.6-litre TDI unit, but the torque output of VW’s motor is just 250 Nm, which pales in comparison to Fiat 1.6-litre engine’s higher turning force.

Scoop – Piaggio Shelves Plans To Launch Fly Scooter In India

piaggio fly 125

You read it first on MotorBeam. We were the first to inform our readers about Piaggio’s plans to launch the Fly Scooter in India. Once again we are the first to inform you that the Italian 2-wheeler company has shelved their plan to launch the Fly scooter in India. It was expected that they will launch the Fly to take advantage of the massive demand of scooters in India. Piaggio had started market research and localisation process for the Fly, but they were finding it quite difficult to price it aggressively. As an expensive scooter has very less chances of being successful in a cost conscious market, Piaggio has completely cancelled their plans to launch the Fly.

Piaggio originally planned to launch the Fly, with the engine from the Vespa LX125. This is a 125cc LEADER (Low Emission Advanced Engine Range) engine with 3-valves producing almost 10 BHP. The Fly though was supposed to get a 2-valve version in an attempt to lower the cost of the scooter. The name 'Fly' is owned by Bajaj in India so Piaggio was going to name it 'Flyer' in India. The Italian 2-wheeler company was struggling to price it at their target price of Rs. 50-55,000/-.

Piaggio already sells the Vespa LX125 in India and it is priced with quite a premium over its competition. But due to the Vespa's huge fan following and its image being of a lifestyle product, it is selling quite well. Recently they reduced costs of the Vespa which has given a further boost to its sales. But this wouldn't have been the case with the Fly scooter as it does not have any special fan following or lifestyle product status in India. So anticipating failure for the Fly, Piaggio has cancelled its launch.

Piaggio does plan to storm the Indian market with other products. The company plans to bring in a 110cc scooter along with more variants of the Vespa. Piaggio is also planning to enter the motorcycle segment and will follow the top-down approach, bringing in a 250cc motorcycle first, followed by more affordable commuter bikes later. The company will further expand dealerships and three new showrooms will be opened in Mumbai by August 2013. Will Piaggio be able to compete with other 2-wheeler biggies is yet to be seen.

Volkswagen To Launch Up! Hybrid With XL1 Drivetrain

Posted: 25 Feb 2013 01:51 AM PST

Volkswagen Up!

Volkswagen is working on a new hybrid version of the Up! small car which will use the revolutionary 110 km/l diesel hybrid drivetrain from the XL1. Volkswagen has showcased the production version of the XL1 recently but it is not expected to do high volumes as it is a 2-seater coupe. So Volkswagen will use this incredible hybrid technology in a car which has mass appeal, the 4 seater hatchback, Up!, which will get the ball rolling with the diesel plug-in hybrid.

The Volkswagen Up! small car is said to be the perfect car to put in the diesel hybrid drivetrain due to its light weight of just 795 kgs. This is just 136 kgs more than the XL1. So the Up! Hybrid should get close to the 110 km/l claimed fuel efficiency of the XL1 even though it weighs slightly more and lacks the sleek aerodynamics of the original XL1 car. Volkswagen is working on this car at the moment and exact information of when the Up! Hybrid will be launched has not been provided by them.

The Volkswagen Up! Hybrid will use exactly the same drivetrain of the XL1 which consists of a 0.8-litre two-cylinder TDI diesel engine, producing 47 HP, plus an electric motor producing another 27 HP. This power is transferred to the wheels via a 7-speed dual-clutch transmission. There is a lithium-ion battery to store electricity and can give a range of 50 kms on battery power alone. It can be estimated that the production version of the Volkswagen Up! Hybrid should be ready for launch by 2015.

Honda Removes PGM-Fi From CBF Stunner 125

Posted: 25 Feb 2013 01:44 AM PST

Black_Honda_CBF_Stunner

Honda has discontinued the CBF Stunner 125 PGM-Fi (Programmed Fuel Injection) variant in India, due to low demand for the fuel injected variant. Honda introduced the PGM-Fi variant in 2009 in order to boost up sales of the motorcycle but eventually the demand for the variant came down because the consumers were not willing to pay extra amount for FI technology. There was almost no difference between the carbureted version and the fuel injected version.

In terms of power and performance, there was no significant improvement on the PGM-Fi variant. The only difference was low CO2 emissions and higher pricing. The fuel injection technology cuts down the emissions significantly and helps start the engine without any hassle in different climatic conditions. The technology comes with a cost and increases the price of the bike, which is a failure amongst the cost sensitive Indian buyers.

Honda had removed the details of the FI variant from its website few days ago and has phased out the variant without any notification. Honda is not the only manufacturer to discontinue FI variant from its line-up, Bajaj Auto had also phased out the Pulsar 220 DTS-Fi with TVS pulling the plug from the Apache RTR 160 FI. The Honda CBF Stunner 125 PGM-Fi was priced at Rs. 65,842/-, while the basic variant starts at Rs. 51,449/- (all prices ex-showroom, Delhi).

Tata Motors To Build Low Cost ‘Composite’ Cars

Posted: 25 Feb 2013 01:39 AM PST

2012 Tata Nano Special Edition

Tata Motors will build a new line-up of low costs cars, alongside the Nano, which will be made out of composites instead of the traditional steel or aluminium. It is said that a prototype for this composite car is ready and has been tested for safety as well but it is unlikely it will be put into production immediately. Tata Motors will try and stabilize their business of their current line-up and first introduce new cars that should give them better sales in the future before they introduce this new technology in the Indian market.

Tata Motors have bought rights for this new composite technology from Italian pioneer, Marcello Gandini, who first used composite materials in supercars like the Lamborghini Miura and the Countach. Usually composites in today's world mean Carbon Fibre which is the material of choice for supercar companies all over the world, but it is extremely expensive. Tata Motors will use an industrial alternative called the poly-diallyl-phthalate (PDP) to make these cars and PDP panels and moulds will replace steel body and chassis parts.

The PDP is very light, very strong and much cheaper to build, in terms of material and infrastructure as well than steel and aluminium. A metal body requires about 500 parts but the same in PDP will require only about 25 moulds. So the finished car will be much lighter, and thus more fuel efficient, safer due to its strength and will have lower vibration and noise levels than a metal car. In the long run it may be cheaper than its alternatives as well offering higher fuel efficiency. Tata Motors will build a modular chassis for this car.

However no official information about the launch of this car is available from the company. Tata Motors will first try and improve sales of conventional cars and then focus on launching this revolutionary vehicle. The car maker will launch a new premium hatchback based on a modified Indica platform and improve its current line-up.
